Capturing Teen Spirit

My photo shoots lately have consisted primarily of families that have boys; not little boys, but pre-teen, teenage boys. While this may frighten some photographers away, I love a good challenge. I also feel that because my life is immersed in testosterone with two boys of my own, their friends and my nephews that I text with on a regular basis, I don't sweat the boys.

The hardest part of photographing a teenage boy is to capture their authentic smile, not that fake one they are so good at turning on and off when asked. This often forces me to be more of an extrovert than I am comfortable with in attempts to connect with them in a short period of time. I am always honest, "Yes, this sucks. Yes, I know you don't want to be here, I get that. Yes, the last thing you want to do is put your arm around your younger sibling and act like you love them. I know. But I am going to try and make it quick and painless and maybe even fun." (They never believe that last part.)

Here are some recent photos of some of the boys I have been blessed to photograph. Including my own two boys who will occasionally allow their weird, snap happy mom to take a few shots.

Love & Light,
