Hello Happiness...

I am reading this new book called The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.  I am about a quarter of the way into the book and I LOVE IT! It is inspiring me to start my own happiness project. As Rubin writes, it is not that she is unhappy but it is that she could be happier, she could enjoy life more. Rubin recommends to start with practical, tangible objectives with the goal of bringing more happiness to our lives.

So I thought a lot about the first few chapters and what really resonated with me is how often I  neglect to fulfill the basic necessities. Sleep, eat, drink (and this does not refer to rum and cokes). I started to look more closely at my sleeping. If I get 7 hours a night, it is a good night. And how often do I wake up for crying kids, barking dogs, tossing spouses, nightmares about every fear from death to spiders? I typically don't go to bed before 11 pm. I have my "shows" I need to watch, my blog to write, my photos to edit, laundry, dishes, bills, or just one more chapter in this book I cannot put down. Then I look at the clock... 12:28 am. I drag myself to bed and rehash the day before I drift off. Not good.

So I am aiming this month to be in bed by 9 pm. I don't have to be asleep but I need to be ready for bed and at least setting the tone to fall asleep.  I did this last night and I woke up this morning, well... refreshed. I felt better. I had more patience, I was less moody, I reacted with less frustration toward my kids, which made them happier which made me happier. So... it kind of worked.

I have added this month the eating and drinking piece as well. This means increasing my daily water intake to 64 ounces and taking my vitamins every night. I always feel better when I am hydrated and when I remember to take my vitamins I feel as though I have more energy. These are three easy things that I can do. If I look at the big picture, these are small but essential steps to laying the foundation to bring more happiness to my life.

Here are some photos from this past weekend
