All Good Things Must End

So the final days of our vacation have arrived. We leave tomorrow morning to drive back to Richmond. It has been a wonderful week. I always get a little sad when we leave places, especially places so beautiful. Even though I am ready to get back home, there is still a twinge of melancholy.

I was thinking about the ocean and that saying about how you should never turn your back toward it. I believe it is a Hawaiian saying that refers to the caution you should take when in the ocean, if you are not careful the strength of the waves will knock you off your feet. However, to me this saying speaks to the difficulty in turning your back toward it, walking away. Saying goodbye. There is a mystery about the ocean. A solitude. A magic presence that it exudes, that when I turn to leave, my heart aches.
